Given the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19, in the United States, restaurants and public places are beginning to take up measures from the past to try to control the wave of contagion. For this reason, the McDonald’s restaurant, along with other fast-food chains, are once again limiting both the operational hours as well as the interior spaces of the food outlets.

After the closure of the interior spaces of almost all McDonald’s restaurants in 2020, a month ago, the operations of almost 70% of the fast-food chain’s interior dining rooms had been announced again. However, a few days ago, it was recommended to consider closing the spaces with tables in the counties where the spread of COVID-19 has rebounded.

For restaurant executives, it is important to “closely monitor” and increase the security protocols that already existed and not reach the levels of contagion that occurred in the United States in the spring, says a statement from the fast-food company.

In the same way, the working hours of almost all their restaurants have been reduced, and they will emphasize the “self-service” service, the food to take away, and the delivery service, which is a type of service that, in all, this year has allowed McDonald’s to have no loss in sales.

But McDonald’s is not the only restaurant chain in the United States to strengthen its measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and protect its employees. Apart from them, there have been many others. For restaurants like Taco Bell, where almost 20% of their clientele is at night, this type of schedule cuts, such as closing at 8 PM instead of closing at midnight, significantly affects their sales. In this sense, the chain of fast-food restaurants, Chick-fil-A, has also announced that it closes some of its branches because it is amidst a personnel crisis which is becoming a big strain. Along with that, the employees also seem to be exhausted as they do not have any relief. 

The news of the development came to light through the social media networks of the restaurant, where they have talked about closing down a bunch of several branches in Alabama while explaining all the plausible reasons for the temporary closure. In the evaluation of the counties that have more infections of Covid-19, McDonald’s calculates that the cases exceed 250 infections per 100,000 people in an average of 3 weeks.
